![“When I talk about Sampiripiri [the Butterfly Project], I talk about it in a very positive way because I am seeing girls who are helpless. They are now starting to gain energy to strive in their education. I am seeing them doing well, especially the younger girls. I can say Sampiripiri is doing a lot of good work, because they have started very well, especially in the safe spaces, they have started to protect girls, especially those that cannot say no for themselves. They have started to nurture them so that they can have their voices.”<br />

“The challenges that the girls are undergoing in these villages, especially the Samburu girl child, are many. One of the challenges we have is this retrogressive culture which is very harmful. For example, we have FGM. FGM is still there and is strongly practiced in the community. A girl has no voice to say no to FGM, and we also have early marriages, you have a very small girl sometimes even under ten years old being married. And that is one of the challenges that we have - stopping girl child marriages when they are very young. Early marriage is something that demoralizes a girl when she is young and even she becomes helpless, throughout her life because she is traumatized mentally,” says Florence. <br />

“I think what inspired me really is the harsh environment…because I grew up in a very harsh environment whereby you have to struggle for yourself, you have to live your own way, you have to undergo all these challenges and therefore if you do not say no for yourself, to many other things that drag you back, then you can't achieve (anything). So I believe..that working in this harsh environment sometimes inspires you. People who are also undergoing challenges and do not have the strength to stand by themselves, you can help. That is exactly what made me become a teacher so that I can help in my community.
