Site of a recent protest in Iran where young girls are increasingly active in denouncing restrictions on their liberties and rights. The conservative nation has been rocked over the past month by strikes, uprisings, and acts of social defiance like removing hijabs in public and cutting one’s hair following the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who was taken into police custody for a dress code infraction. Girls hold profound power in that their brave presence creates more challenges for security forces wanting to violently subdue the crowds, and signals to those who wish to dominate them that future generations will continue this fight. Some, like 16 year old Nika Shahkarami who was located by her parents in a detention center’s morgue, are sacrificing their lives. Women and girls around the world are standing in solidarity through planned events held in major cities including DC, London, Istanbul, Madrid, and Kabul. Photo by Enrico Mattia Del Punta, 2022.
