SURVIVING ACID ATTACKS, INDIA

A disfiguring and sometimes deadly retributive act generally taken by, or on behalf of, men whose advances the women rejected, acid attacks disfigure hundreds of women and girls in India every year. Formerly a star volleyball player, Ritu was attacked by her cousin. After several reconstructive surgeries, she lost her left eye. 2016.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Stephanie Sinclair has used her images to put faces to some of the world’s most serious gender and human rights issues. Her multimedia series, Too Young to Wed, which Sinclair also shepherded into a global nonprofit, addresses the deeply troubling practice of early, forced and child marriage around the world today.
