THREE BRIDES – NOW FREE, AFGHANISTAN

Suleiha, Nazia and Benazir are best friends and play together in the Internally Displaced Persons camp where they live. Each had been sold as a “bride” for around $2,000 by families experiencing extreme poverty. Too Young To Wed worked with families and community faith leaders to cancel their marriages, and the girls are now home and enrolled in robotics school, while their families receive livelihood support. UNICEF estimates that 28 percent of Afghan women aged 15–49 years were married before the age of 18, with consensus among international NGOs that rates of child marriages in Afghanistan have increased exponentially since the return of the Taliban. 2022.

Oriane Zerah is a freelance photographer represented by WostokPress agency. She was born in Paris and studied Dramatic Art and Dance, then worked for a few years in a French Polish troupe before joining the Théâtre du Soleil (1999-2001). Based in Afghanistan she photographs extensively for international NGOs documenting social issues and has exhibited her work from the region in
major cities around the world.
