Girls ride a temporary raft across a flooded street in a residential area after heavy monsoon rains in Karachi. Pakistan has seen the most severe flooding in its recent history affecting a third of the nation’s landmass and 33 million inhabitants. Homes and villages were washed away leaving 3.4 million children at risk of waterborne diseases, drowning and malnutrition. UN Women states that: “disasters such as this are worse for women, girls, and women with disabilities. They face the biggest challenges including access to humanitarian assistance…the needs and vulnerabilities of women and girls are often distinct during disasters.” 2022.
